About This Tour
Lukomir is not a tourist attraction. No ticket booths, no gift shops, no guided route marked with signs. It is simply a village — one that has refused to disappear despite being the highest and most isolated settlement in Bosnia. That stubbornness is exactly what makes it worth the trip.
Getting There
The drive up Bjelašnica is part of the experience, not a preamble to it. Forests give way to open plateaus, the road thins, the asphalt ends — and by the time the first stone houses come into view, you already feel far from the world you left behind.
The Village
There is no set programme once you arrive. Walk the narrow lanes, stop where something catches your eye, talk to whoever is around. The guide is there to give context — the rhythm of life here, the architecture, the winters that cut the village off for months at a time, the quiet tension between preservation and survival. Lukomir rewards curiosity more than it rewards a checklist.
Rakitnica Canyon
A short trail from the village edge brings you to the rim of one of the deepest river canyons in the Balkans — 800 metres of sheer drop into a valley so remote it has no road access to this day. There is not much to say about it. You will understand when you see it.
Lunch
Somewhere between the canyon walk and the drive back, there is a meal. Local ingredients, prepared the way they have always been prepared here. It is not fine dining — it is better than that.
Good to Know
A 4x4 vehicle is used for the unpaved village road. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour runs throughout the year — spring and early autumn offer the most dramatic landscape, while winter trips carry their own particular atmosphere, weather permitting.
